Individual Details

William Ecton

(April 21, 1905 - May 5, 1971)

William Ecton quit high school in the 8th grade to go to work. He worked all his life, dying only months before he planned to retire. He was a good and gentle man, provided for his family. He was a deacon of his church in the later years of his life. He served his country in the Navy during WW II as a Ham radio operator stationed in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His primary occupation was a self-employed grocer, doing exceptionally well before all the big chains started to eat into his business. He sold his last grocery store (on the corner of S. Broadway and Virginia Avenue in Lexington) and went to work as a maintenance engineer for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington. He single-handedly built a very nice house on Herrington Lake in Kentucky where he and his wife Flossie were going to spend most of their time in retirement. He died at Central Baptist Hospital from blood clotting that went to his lungs, and he is buried in the Lexington Cemetery along side his wife. "Now they are together again" is etched on his head stone.
