Merritt Kirks

(Abt, 1833 - February 22, 1899)

Merritt Kirks married Mary Elizabeth Green on February 9, 1860 at the home of her parents, John and Polly Haggard Green in Bates County, Missouri. They were married by Elder Martin White, a Baptist Minister. Their attendants were Mr. and Mrs. John Owens. (Possibly Mr. Owens was a cousin of Mary E. Green).

He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Fulton County, Arkansas in 1861. His Generals were Marmaduke and General Sterling Price. In all probability he was in battles of Pea Ridge, Arkansas and Pilot Knob, Missouri. He was captured by the Northern Army with a group of Confederate Soldiers of Co. B. Ford's Batallion, Calvary. His Brigadier General at the time was M. Jeff Thompson. Brig General Thompson surendered to Major General G. M Dodge, USA Commanding Department of the Missouri. This was May 11, 1865. He was paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas June 5, 1865.

1867 - Merritt and his family migrated to St. Charles County, Missouri. This was because of persecution of all Confederate Soldiers and Sympathizers in Western Missouri.

1870 - Merritt had moved to Lincoln County, Missouri. They purchased a farm about 7 miles South of Troy, Missouri. near the Sand Run Primitive Baptist Church.

1879 - Merritt moved to Montgomery County, Missouri. They bought a farm about 2 miles south of Middletown. They lived here the rest of their lives.
