John Calvin Ellis served in Co. G. of 53rd Regiment of North Carolina Troops. His service record shows that he resided in Stokes County, North Carolina where he enlisted at age 18 on Feb 5, 1863. Reported present in July 1863-Apr 1864. Wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia on May 12, 1864. Reported absent wounded until Sept 1, 1864 when he was reported absent without leave. Returned to duty in Jan/Feb of 1865. Captured near Petersburg, VA on Apr 2, 1865. Confined at point Lookout, Maryland on April 4, 1865. Released at Point Lookout, Maryland on June 12, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
