Miss Lou K. Poage, 89, one of Ashland’s best known and most highly respected citizens, died at her home, 1016 Winchester avenue, at 12:30 o’clock this afternoon. Her death resulted from a stroke which she suffered yesterday after having been confined to her bed for the last five weeks from a fractured hip which she sustained in a fall.
News of Miss Poage’s passing, although not wholly unexpected, came as a source of profound sorrow to her wide circle of friends throughout Ashland and vicinity.
Miss Poage for many years was active in the civic life of Ashland, which was her home all of her life. She was a very active member of the First Presbyterian church, and attended various services regularly unless prevented from doing so by illness. For many years, or until the pipe organ was installed in the Presbyterian church, Miss Poage was the organist. She taught Sunday School for several years, and many of the young boys which she imbued with the teachings of the Master are now leading business men of the city and all have the most profound respect for her and all are deeply grieve by her death.
Miss Poage was born December 26, 1843, in the old Poage home, which was located on a beautiful spot along the river here, the daughter of R. Cyrus Poage, found of the City of Ashland, which was named for her brother, Ashland Poage.
Miss Poage was educated her in Beech Grove Academy, a school conducted by the late Dr. Bayless, and after graduating from that institution she became an instructor there for several years.
Her father founded the R. C. Poage Milling Company, one of Ashland, leading industries of several years. After the elder Poage’s death, Miss Poage’s death, Miss Poage and her brother were in active charge of this business for a number of years. She was a woman of great business ability and was successful in all of her undertakings.
Miss Poage had the confidence and respect of all her acquaintances and she was an active member of the Woman’s Club, the Twentieth Century Club, member of the Ashland Public Library Board and many other organizations. In all these organizations, Miss Poage service in high office, being treasurer of them for a number of years.
Miss Poage has many relatives, including several nieces and nephews, among them being E. S. Poage of this city.
Arrangements for the funeral haven not been completed and the family requested that no flowers be sent
