Thomas Martin was a big gambler with his brothers-in-law; James Merdedith Frederick Ludwick Ashwell, and Benjamin C. Ellis, Jr. He lost a bet and they filed with Bedford County courthouse. Thomas Martin was forced to sell all his belongings. In 1844 on foot he walked to Patrick County, Virginia where his wife's brother, John Ellis and wife Martha lived. Thomas Martin walked with son, James age 6; daughter, Nancy born 1843 a year old, and pregnant wife, Emmaline Ellis to Patrick County, Virginia.
