George David Cantrell

(May 10, 1838 - March 22, 1910)

"George David Cantrell accompanied his parents to Marion County, Alabama. In 1860 he was living in Marion County and was working for the widow of cousin William H. Cantrell. He enlisted in the United States Service at Corinth, Mississippi on the 20 February 1863 as a private in Company G, 1st Regiment Alabama Volunteer Cavalry. He fought in the Civil War and was honorably discharged at Memphis, Tennessee on 19 March 1864. He had several places of residence since leaving the service. They are as follows: Carbondale, Illinois from 1864 to 1870; moved to Marion County, Arkansas from 1870 to 1899; moved to Boone County, Arkansas from 1899 to his death. He married Margaret Caroline Sullivan.

"George moved his wife to Illinois and their first child was born there, in 1868. Soon thereafter, George moved to Arkansas and in 1870, they were recorded in Prairie Township Post Office Clear Creek. He was a farmer on rented land, and he had a personal property valued at $100. In 1880 they were recorded in Tomahawk Township, Marion County, Arkansas. In 1900 the family was recorded in Harrison Township, Boone County and he was renting a farm. Margaret indicated that six of her twelve children were living at that time. Five of them were at home. Names of eight of the children have been located. Margaret died July 12, 1902 in Everton, Boone County, Arkansas and George died March 22, 1910 of Pulmonary Congestion. At the time of his death he was living with his son, Isaac, in Everton, Arkansas. He is buried next to his wife in the Crawford Cemetery, two miles north of Everton, Boone County, Arkansas." "His personal description at enlistment (20 February 1863) was as follows: Height, 5 feet 11 inches; complexion, Fair; color of eyes, Blue; color of hair, light; that his occupation was Farmer; that he was born May 10, 1838, at McMinn County, Tennessee." (Declaration for Pension, 8 June 1908.)
