"Sgt., Bowling's Detach., War of 1812. Ensign, 92nd Dist. Co. (Washington County) Ga. Militia, Oct. 13, 1814. 1st Sgt., Capt. David Clark's Volunteer Co. of Artillery, 1816. Clerk of Superior Court, Jefferson Co., Ga., 1819. Appointed Justice of Inferior Court, Jefferson Co., Nov. 12, 1819. ELected Surveyor of Richmond Co., Ga., Jun. 14 1836. The surveying compass he used was the one owned by Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe in laying out Savannah. This compass, manufactured by Matthew Walker, 1721, was presented to the Ga. Hist.
