Weldon Bascom Morton

"HOUSTON � Weldon B. Morton, 90, passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2004, in Houston, Texas. Weldon was born to the Rev. W. Bascom Morton and Leona Barker Morton on May 11, 1914 in Eastland, Texas. His father was Methodist Minister. Weldon completed Abilene High School and attended McMurry and graduated in 1937. He was a member of the J. B. Hunt Society, President of McMurry Chanters and a member of the men's quartet and Duke University School of Religion in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Darwin Andrus asked him to come to the Texas Methodist Conference is 1938. He was given an Honorary Doctorate Degree from McMurry University in 1970. He and Nora Beth Merriman were married in Throckmorton in October 1938. His first appointment was at Almeda and Genoa in Houston, then to Pearland, Texas, Garden Villas and the Centerville, Texas, Leona and Evans Chapel. In 1942, he volunteered as a Chaplin in World War II. In 1945, he returned to his wife and two sons and to the Methodist Texas Conference. He served the following churches: East Bernard, Beneke Memorial, Pittsburg, Rosenberg, Lake Jackson, Galveston Moody Memorial First Methodist, Superintendent Huntsville District, Bryan First Methodist Lakeview Methodist Conference Center, Palestine, Texas. Retirement began in 1981, and took him to Throckmorton, Texas for 3 years. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce, employed by Merriman Funeral Home in Throckmorton and on the board of the Methodist Church. Palestine called him back as Associate Pastor of the Methodist Church. Retirement then took him to the Moody House in Galveston where he lived and was Associate Pastor of the Moody Memorial Methodist Church. He served as Chaplin at Clarewood House in Houston where he lived his remaining years. Survivors are his wife of 66 years, Nora Beth Morton of Houston; three sons, W. Merriman Morton and wife Kerry of Austin, Texas, W. Barker Morton and wife Pitu of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Edwin (Bill Ed) Morton of Marbridge Ranch Manchaca, Texas; brother, Glenn Morton and wife Sue of Apex, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Clara Morton of Abilene, Texas, Jeannette Morton of Dallas, Jackie Morton of Henderson and Betty Morton of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; brother-in-law Edwin Merriman and wife Mary Jo of Lubbock, Texas; four grandchildren, David and Julie Morton, Melissa and Mark Rapo, Michelee and Jimmy Davis, Ben and Kelley Morton; 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on December 23, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Houston at the Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood Dr, in Houston. Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 24, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the Merriman-Archer Funeral Chapel in Throckmorton, Texas with the Rev. John Sanders and Glenn Morton officiating. Burial will follow at Throckmorton Cemtery. Memorials may be made to Marbridge Ranch, P. O. Box 2250, Manchacha, Texas 78652 or to Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood Dr., Houston, Tx. 77036."
