Chattanooga, Tenn., March 7. ~ Howell Cobb, a candidate of the officers' reserve training camp, member of a well-known Georgia family, died of a complication of diseases in the hospital at Fort Oglethorpe today.

Howell Cobb, grandson of Mrs Howell Cobb of this city, died yesterday afternoon at five o'clock at Camp Forrest, Chickamauga, Ga.

It was not given to him to fight beneath the Stars and Stripes across the seas, but in the weeks of illness that preceded the final summons, he faced the grim reaper with the courage of which the bravest soldiers are made.

When his county entered the lists to defend the rights of the people of all the world, he was among the first to move towards the front. He was an applicant for admission into the first training camp for officers at Ft McPherson and was accepted. His notice, through an error, was misdirected and he received it after the camp had been organized. He was disappointed, but waited until the government could give him another chance.

He left Athens for Camp Forrest the picture of health, full of enthusiasm and patriotism, determined to do his full duty and to live up to the highest and best traditions of the South. A bright and useful future as a soldier of the republic seemed to be before him.

Scarcely had he begun his work at Camp Forrest when he was stricken by meningitis. For days his life was despaired of and then he rallied, only to suffer an attack of pneumonia and following that a return of meningitis.

It was a brave and beautiful fight he made against the last foe for there were time when he fully realized the gravity of his condition. He fell in the line of his duty and made the supreme sacrifice in his own native state but he gave evidence of courage and loyalty that would have made him an able and efficient officer had he been spared to take his place among his country's defenders. He was the son of Mr Howell Cobb, now of El Paso, Texas, the grandson of the late Judge Howell Cobb and the late Capt Wiley B Burnett of this city. He is survived by his grandmothers, Mrs Howell Cobb and Mrs W B Burnett. He was born in Athens and here in this city had many friends who will deeply mourn his death. He was twenty-three years of age last August. Since his boyhood he had been a member of the Presbyterian church.

His body will be laid to rest in his native city beside the Oconee and near to those he loved. The funeral details have not yet been arranged and will be announced later. (Athens Banner, Mar 8, 1918 ~ page 3.)
