"Lula McCormick was born near Spring Hill, Maury County, Tennessee. Her mother died when she was only 9, then her father married a younger sister of her mother. Lyzinka must have been very young when she married because she was only 17 when her first child was born. One theory is that she did not get along with her step-mother and married to get away from home. Another is that her parents had a husband picked out for her whose social status was comparable to theirs and bitterly opposed her marring a field hand on her father's farm, who had been married and already had children. However, she did not love the man of their choice and married against their wishes. To find peace and happiness for herself and her husband, they moved west and lived for a time on Indian territory and later settled in Weakley County, Tennessee where most of her children were born. After she married she cut off all family ties and never told her children why." (from a letter written on November 19, 1984 to Vera Brewer Frazier from Elizabeth Chappell of Albuquerque, New Mexico.)
