Jane Luckett

(April, 1814 - )

"Jane Luckett Lanier was born In Virginia in 1814. She was the wife of Robert Lanier and the mother of Captain Theodore Lanier. Included in the photograph of Jane Lanier, is her oldest daughter, Mary Anne, born in 1839 in Lincoln County, Virginia. Mary Anne was educated in St. Genevieve, Missouri. She and her family had strong Southern sympathies. She was the cousin of the "Poet of the Confederacy," Sidney Lanier. Family tradition relates that Mary Anne's first marriage ended in divorce because she and her first husband had violent disagreements over secession. He allegedly ripped the earrings from her ears in one pitched battle. A marriage record for Mary Anne to Henry Shultis, of Dutch descent, of Hudson Valley New York on July 24.1854 lends some credence to this story. Mary Anne remarried in 1862 to William Hume Goodlett, a cotton factor from Memphis, Tennessee. Upon his death in 1888, she married his brother, James E. Goodlett, a partner in the cotton firm. Mary Anne was the mother of three daughters and one son. She died in 1924 in Memphis, Tennessee and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, also the final resting place of 14 Confederate generals."
