Emory Andrew Kemper

(February 18, 1918 - June 2, 1944)

"Emory Andrew Kemper graduated from Melrose, New Mexico High School in 1935. He was an outstanding student, and was valedictorian of his class. At the time of his enlistment in the U. S. Army, January 1, 1942, he was assistant manager of Panhandle Lumber Company at Roswell, New Mexico. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the infantry upon completion of Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, June 1942. Promoted rapidly, he was mad a 1st lieutenant in October 1942, and was advanced to the rank of captain in June 1943. At the time he was killed, he was scheduled for promotion to major. Serving with the 31st Infantry, he was sent overseas November 10, 1943, landing in North Africa, where he remained about a month before going to Italy. He gave a gallant account of himself. His death occurred as he was fearlessly urging and encouraging the men of the battalion forward, in the face of fierce enemy resistance. He was killed in action June 2, 1944, near Rome Italy."
