Although William Ray was married to Ann Faw and having children by her, at the same time he was fathering children by his cousin, Catherine Ray, all their children, except Julie were born out of wedlock. There are two charges in the Ashe County court docket, one, the fall term of 1862 for fornification and adultry. another in 1864 for adultry.
