(Anson County, North Carolina, Will Book 1, page 37.)

"William Terry, son of James and Margaret Terry, of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, came to Anson County in the fall of 1750, having bought a tract of land on the west bank of the Pee Dee River. He had married, about 1745, Mary, the eldest daughter of Matthew and Mourning Raiford. Although their wives seem to have been sisters, there is no evidence that the two William Terrys were, in any way, related. Most of the Terrys of Richmond County are descendants from the William and Anne (Nancy), and in his SKETCHES published in the Post Dispatch, July-October 1927, Capt. Everett wrote of this branch of the Terrys, and of the Pickett, Mask, and Wall families, into which the Raifords also married. William Terry was an early Justice of Anson County (1755-56) and a Captain in the Militia (1758-61), commanding a company of rangers in the Cherokee Campaign of 1760. He made his will September 6, 1775 and died between April 21, 1778 and May 14, 1782." ("Rockingham Post-Dispatch," Richmond County, North Carolina, 30 November 1949, from which information about William Terry, his family and descendants is taken.)

"William Terry, because of his connections, was a member of the Court House Ring. He was also a Justice of the Peace. His brother-in-law, William Pickett, whose second wife was Mourning Raiford Robards, William's wife's sister, was sheriff of Anson County, North Carolina and William Terry's son, James, was his deputy and one of the Justices." (Frances Wynn notes, 1976.)

Various sources show William Terry to have been born in Northampton County, King William County, King and Queen County, Virginia, or Edgecombe County, North Carolina. His will is dated 1775. (Information from McBee, DAR, Blythe, and Wynn records and Robinson Bible.)

"He was known as William Terry of Savannah Creek." (RAIFORD FAMILY by W. R. Raiford, 1989, page 135)
