Thomas William Steele

"Thomas W. Steele, aged 65, wealthy planter and old resident of Scott, died at his home near Scott at 12:30 o'clock Friday morning, July 16, 1926, following a cerebral hemorhage. He had been in ill health for more than six months, but his death was unexpected as his condition was thought to be improving. Members of the family said that he had been in the best spirits Thursday, and retired about 11 o'clock Thursday night. Shortly after midnight his groans awakened his nurse and when she reached him he was dead. Mr. Steele is survived by his widow; one son, T. W. Steele Jr., of Scott; two daughters, Mrs. Bruce Ellis and Mrs. Alfred Craig of Little Rock; one sister, Mrs. W. P. Dortch of Bearskin, who is in Europe; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Saturday at the All Soul's Church at Scott, conducted by the Rev. M. T. Workman, pastor of the Pulaski Heights M. E. Church. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery here. Pallbearers will be: Honorary - M. L. Walt, J. M. Pemberton, J. R. Alexander, C. N. Alexander, A. L. Alexander, E. L. McHaney, Conoway Scott, M. B. Sanders, Frank Ginochio, Dr. W. L. Sadler and J. H. Johnson. Active - Albert Slaughter, J. B. Websterm, Tom Freeman, Lilburn Biggs, Ernest Templeton and W. G. Swain. Healey and Roth are in charge of funeral arrangements. Mr. Steele was the son of Col. and Mrs. T. W. Steele, who were among the first residents of the Scott community. His mother was the daughter of Col. Bob Little. Mr. Steele was widely known throughout the state as a planter. He owned about 7,000 acres of land, nearly all of which is in cultivation. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge and the Old River Club. he also had served as commissioner for several levee and drainage districts." (Little Rock, Arkansas newspaper obituary.)
