John Harris Divers
(November 28, 1829 - March 6, 1891)
1880 Pettis County, Missouri census.
"I have been studying my grandfather Carpenter's family since the mid 1970s. I saw the 1880 census for Pettis County, Missouri, for the John Divers family. My grandfather, Major Carpenter at age 10, is listed. The Louise who is age 2 cannot be a daughter by John's first marriage to Mary Ann Brown. Mary Ann died in 1871 according to your own and others' record. My grandfather Carpenter was supposed to have two half sisters, Lulu Divers and Velma Divers. I know from several records that Velma was born in 1883. My conclusion is that Louise is really Lulu. Now I'm trying to prove it. Lulu married a Bill Musgrave. Both of them died in the flu epidemic of 1918 along with a son. About 3 daughters survived. However I have no way to contact any descendants. The widow Margaret Carter CARPENTER Carpenter and the widower John Divers were married in Aug. 1877. Margaret's first husband was her double second cousin. I am pursuing all possible avenues to find Bible records or other documentation for Margaret's family. Recently I have been in contact with a descendant of one son that we can't connect to his parents. I know he was a member of the family, but he was not listed on the 1870 census. 'Will' Carpenter was killed at a young age by someone who disagreed with something he had written of a political nature in a west Texas town. This event occurred in about 1893."
