William C. Shields

(Abt, 1822 - Aft 1880)

1860 Burnet County, Texas census.

1880 Milam County, Texas census.

"It is thought that William Shields was killed in the Civil War. Apparently, Mary Jane (Wood) Shields moved to Texas, or was already in Texas, when the war began, with the children and probably other relatives, sometime before 1863. Most of this family lived in the Whon - Rockwood area and are buried at Whon." ("Coleman County and Its People," 1985, article, William and Mary Jane Shields Family, by Ralph Terry.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Apparently William Shields was not killed in the civil war, as he appears on the 1880 Milam County, Texas census, with her wife, several of the younger children and his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Jacob Avants.)
