John Calvin Baker

(1827 - 1894)

"Elizabeth McCarroll married my uncle John Calvin Baker and they moved to California about 1854." (John Calvin Greear)

"John Calvin Baker, from all indications was the oldest of the children. He owned and resided on the Jess Osburn farm, Grassy Creek, North Carolina, which may have been where his father lived. He sold his farm in 1854 or 1855 and went to California by wagon train, leaving his wife and four children with his father in law, David McCarroll. He settled in San Francisco, where his home seems to have been until his death. He was in California for five years before he came back to Grassy Creek for his wife and family. Two of his children, Annie and Wiley, were born in California. Before he died, John Calvin became an influencial citizen of San Francisco and accumulated considerable property."
