Maude Ethel Polston

"Maude Ethel Higgins, 93 - Lakeview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lamar, Missouri died after a long illness. Maude Ethel Higgins was born April 16,1904 to W. A. Polston and Ida Mae (Greer) Polston in the rural area of Dade County, Missouri. Ethel as she was known, grew up in the rural area of Sylvania, Missouri, which is located in the northwest corner of Dade County, Missouri. She attended school in this rural area. It was in this area she met Walter Olin Higgins. They were married May 26, 1923 at Greenfield, Missouri. They were together for over 62 years. Olin passed away 01-10-1986.
"The couple lived on a farm l 1/2 miles east of the ten mile corner in Dade County Missouri from 1923 to 1945. In the spring of 1945 they had a sale and moved to Lamar Missouri. They lived through the great depression on their farm. It was a very hard time for them, but love and kindness was always present in the home. They were blessed with three daughters and two sons whom they loved dearly.
"Ethel was a Home Maker and a very loyal worker in her church. She could always be counted on for good meals and shelter for the ministers and revivalists of Bethlehem Church where she was a member. She always made sure the Sunday School Literature was ordered and arrived on time. After moving to Lamar she was a charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
"After their move to Lamar she and Olin owned and operated a grocery store in Iantha Missouri. After selling the store they owned a small grocery business at 505 East 9th in Lamar. Later she had restaurants where she was famous for her delicious fried chicken and Home Baked Pies. She loved to cook and serve her customers and they loved her good country style cooking. She was a good neighbor and a loving caring Mother." (Ielene Edmonson, January 2001.)
