"James Thompson Cantrell moved with his parents from DeKalb County, Tennessee to Dade County, Missouri, arriving there November 3, 1848. James Thompson received the best education he could with a few books. There were no public schools in the area until sometime in the 1850's. School advantages were limited in his locality. He assisted his father in clearing and developing the homestead. He enlisted in the Missouri State Militia on August 8, 1862. He served one year in the Militia, then enlisted in the 15th Missouri Cavalry. He was continuously fighting guerrilles while in the regiment. During his tour of duty, he contracted rheumatism from which he never entirely recovered. He was honorably discharged June 30, 1865 in Springfield, Missouri, then returned to the farm. James T. purchased 120 acres of the old homestead from his father, and later acquired another farm joining his land. He always kept his farm under a high state of cultivation and improvement, and he was regarded as one of the leading farmers of his community. Politically, he was a Republican, and he was more or less active in the affairs of his party for many years. He served as clerk of his township for some time, and he was also assessor of the township for two years. James Thompson was elected recorder of deeds of Dade County, Missouri with his usual gratifying results until 1911. He then retired and moved to Walnut Grove, Green County, Missouri."
