Joseph W. Cantrell

(March 22, 1807 - February 22, 1877)

"Joseph W. Cantrell was born 22 March 1807 in the Spartanburg District, South Carolina. When he was quite young his family moved to Warren County, Tennessee where he grew up. In about 1830 he married Cynthia McDowell, a daughter of Luke McDowell born 1791 in North Carolina and Frances Fields born 1795 in Virginia. Cynthia was born in Warren County 19 October 1812. Joseph and Cynthia lived in the 7th Civil District of Warren County where they were recorded in 1840 and already had seven children. Joseph's father, Abraham, died in 1845 leaving three minor children by his second wife, Millie Wade, who was then 42, and apparently had no means of support for the family. Joseph's older brother, John, was acting as administrator of his father's estate but died in 1846 before final settlement of the estate was made. In May 1850, Joseph W. was appointed guardian of his three young half siblings, Sarah, Malissa and Abraham C. Cantrell. Ezekial W. Taylor and George W. Cantrell, Joseph's brother, made bond.

"In 1850 Joseph W., 43, and Cynthia, 37, were living in the 6th district of DeKalb County and eight children were at home. Joseph was a Justice of the Peace and owned his farm in the Belk community of the 6th District. His real estate was valued at $375.00. Millie Wade Cantrell, Joseph's stepmother, 52, was living in the home of Talitha Cantrell, Joseph's deceased brother, John's widow, and Abraham C. Cantrell, 7, Joseph's half-brother, was living in the home of Thomas Durham, DeKalb County Surveyor. The next account of Sarah Cantrell, Joseph's half-sister, was when she married William Pack in DeKalb County 9 December 1867. Malissa, Joseph's other half-sister, married James L. Fuson in DeKalb County, 3 September 1857.

"In 1860 Joseph and Cynthia were still living in the 6th District of DeKalb County and seven of their children were still living at home. In 1870 Joseph, 63, and Cynthia, 57, were again recorded in the Belk Community and only three children, Lafayette L., Mary E. and John A. Cantrell were still at home. Joseph W. Cantrell died in DeKalb County, Tennessee 22 February 1877 and in 1880 his widow, Cynthia McDowell Cantrell, 68, was still living on the farm and her widowed mother, Frances Fields McDowell, 85, was living with her and her oldest son, Lafayette, who never married. Cynthia McDowell Cantrell died in DeKalb County, 27 October 1890 at age 78. She and Joseph W. are believed to be buried in the Pat Cantrell Cemetery in DeKalb County, although there are no markers."
