Individual Details

James Walling Sr.

(July 27, 1746 - March 28, 1786)

James Walling was probably the fifth child born to Elisha Walling, Sr. and Mary Blevins. He was born on 27 July 1746 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, and it is quite likely that he spent all of his early years in the Martinsville, Virginia area. It is not known, however, if he ever accompanied his brother Elisha, Jr., the famed "Long Hunter," on hunting expeditions into Tennessee and Kentucky.

James and Mary were probably married about 1767 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia although no record of this marriage has yet been found. Elisha, Sr., Joseph, and James Wallen are shown on a list of tithables in Pittsylvania County, Virginia by Peter Copeland on 17 July 1767. James Walling probably served in the Revolutionary War as a captain in the Virginia militia. He was living in Montgomery County, Virginia in 1782-87 and appeared on tax lists of that county during that period with Elisha, Jr., John, Joseph, and William Walling. Some researchers have stated that James served in the Navy during the Revolutionary War, but it that service reference is probably for a James Willing.

James Walling lived his entire life in Virginia and did not move west to Tennessee with most of his children. On 26 Mar. 1783, John and his family were living on Fox Creek Branch of the New River in Montgomery County, Virginia. On 27 Mar. 1785, James was ordered by court to survey a wagon road from Good Spur to the Washington County line. He died in Montgomery Co. (now Grayson County), Virginia on 28 March 1786 and is buried just south of the town of Grant in the Pugh Cemetery. James left a will dated 3 Octpber 1785 in Montgomery County, Virginia. It is not known when or where wife Mary died.

From "Annals of Southwest Virginia":

James Walling's will was probated March 28, 1786. His will left his estate to children James, Manning Anderson, and Betsy. Witnesses: Dosal (Dauswell) R. Rogers, William Rogers, James Anderson. Executor: Shadrick Greer.

Walling was sometimes spelled 'Wallen.' James Walling's grave is marked with a fieldstone marker with his name scratched on it. He lived in Grayson County, Virginia.
