Lancelot Armstrong

An interesting account of Stephen and Hannah Bourn's care of these little orphaned grandchildren is found in Louisa County courthouse records as follows:

"GUARDIAN BOND - Stephen Bourn Senr. Gdn. to David, John Bourn and Mary Armstrong, orphans of Lancelot Armstrong Dec's; L1000 current money; Sec. Thomas Meriwether. 12 Jan 1795."

"ACCOUNT - The Orphans of Lancelot Armstrong Dec'd. to Stephen Bourn 1796 boarding and cloathing Mary Armstrong and John B. Armstrong one year last past L16.0; 1 wool hat, spelling books, 1 fur hat, 1 quire paper. Mar. 18, 1797. We do certify that the above children of Lancelot Armstrong lived with Stephen Bourn Senr. the last year having seen them frequently at his house and know they went to school from the said Bourns last year to Mr. Matthew Nightingales, and we also believe from what we have seen and heard that they have been abundantly supplied with good and necessary provision and clothing. 18 Mar. 1797 ... "This is to certify that Mary H. Armstrong and John Bourn Armstrong children of Lancelot Armstrong dec'd came to school to me two years they were boarded by Mr. Stephen Bourn and to my certain knowledge they were well supplyed with good provisions and also was well clothed and furnished 2 new spelling books each. The years they came to School to me was 1795 and 1796. Matthew Nightingale Mar. 18, 1797"

"Estate of Lancelot Armstrong Dec'd. to Stephen Bourn 1795-1802 - 5 pair shoes for use of the decedents children; 1 hat for Nancey Armstrong; 1 hat for John B. Armstrong; as much cotton wool as Polley and Nancey Armstrong could spin; weaving same for use of the children board and schooling Polley, Nancey and John B. Armstrong; spelling books, 2 Testaments; 1798 boarding and clothing Polley and John B. Armstrong; 1 hat for Polley, 1 do. for John B. Armstrong; pd. Mr. Davenport for schooling; 1802 pd. Mr. Talley for schooling John B. Armstrong."
