John Beaumont Swete

John Beaumont Swete entered Oriel College, Oxford, 16 October 1806 aged 19. BA 1810. He and his wife initially lived in Mamhead, a parish adjacent to Kenton. He inherited Traine Manor in Modbury, Oxton House in Kenton, and other properties when his father died in 1821. He movedto Oxton House between 1822 and 1824, and lived there until 1840. He was High Sheriff of Devon.
He sold his inheritance in 1840 and moved to Torquay, Devon. Since then no one named Swete has owned either Traine or Oxton House. The 1851census shows him and his wife, 8 children and 5 servants living at 1 Park Place, Tormoham, Torquay.
He was buried in Torquay Cemetery 9 March 1867. His wife survived himand placed a memorial to him in Kenton church. Part of the inscription reads: "he was a good christian and affectionate husband and parent, a kind friend and neighbor, hospitable and accomplished country gentleman, and was through his life beloved and respected by all classes who knew him. This monument is erected by his widow after a happy married life of nearly 50 years." They had 15 children, but 6 and perhaps7 of their 9 sons died without issue. Memorials in Kenton church.
