Navy List from 1940 to 1945

Photocopy of an ms letter (2pp, plus envelope), dated 27 December 1941, written to his sister in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya but eventually delivered to her in Ceylon, when he was commanding, as an officer in the Malayan RNVR, the naval auxiliary vessel HMS SHUN AU during the Malayan campaign and referring briefly to his ship’s deployment somewhere on the coast of Malaya and their determination to give the Japanese ‘a hot time of it’ if they were attacked, their Christmas celebrations and his sadness at ‘…this happy country being attacked and partly overrun… but perhaps without knowing it we were all much too contented and easy going in the past…’ Henman was a prisoner of war in Sumatra from 1942 to 1945 and died a year after his liberation.
