Alexander Templer

(Abt 1548 - )

Alexander Templer who married Agnes Symons at Bradford-on-Tone in 1573 is possibly the earliest known ancestor. We at present know nothing more about him than this brief fact. He may or may not have come from North Petherton, our earliest known location for Templers.
Unfortunately the North Petherton registers in the 16th century (from 1558 when they commence) do not show any relationships, merely recording the Christian name for all baptisms and deaths. It is not until 1601+ that the father's name only is shown and not until thirty years later that the mother's Christian name is shown in the baptismal register. Between 1558 and 1648, the registers give 73 baptisms, 32 marriages and 64 deaths. Hence it will be appreciated that any attempt to reconstruct true Templer relationships at this period from the scanty detail in registers would be futile. It would need to be supplemented by intensive research among wills, legal documents etc. to achieve worthwhile results.
It is possible too that Alexander had two daughters Agnes, who married a John Standard and another daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1577 the latter in turn having several children. Documentary proof, however, is lacking for this as well as for his being the father of another Alexander who was born at North Petherton in 1579.
