Killed in action while flying in a Brewster Buffalo to intercept a raid by Japanese planes attacking from above. At 16,000 feet, his plane was last seen diving into a cloud over the Straight of Singapore. The Buffalo were notorious for having an inferior engine but were available in 1939 for sale to Australia, and anything was better than nothing.
