Ann Barbara Beryl Dawn Fremantle Yate-Lee

(10 Jun 1931 - 14 Aug 1958)

I am writing the biography of a British actor Anthony Steel whose half-sister was Ann Freemantle Yate-Lee. She was born in 1931 and at some stage in her life changed her surname to Pike. I think Pike was the father of her son Stephen, born in 1954, although they were never married.

She is the lady you mention in your notes about James G. L. Templer, and was probably his first wife. Ann developed a brain tumour and died when she was 27 in 1958.

I know very little about, other than:

She was the daughter of Lt. Colonel Delvin Freemantle Yate-Lee (1902-1981)

and Kathleen Lucy Invicta Steel (nee Laing) (1900-1962)

They married in 1931 shortly after Kathleen's divorce from Major Edward Gerald Steel became absolute. Ann Freemantle Yate-Lee* was born soon after the marriage in 1931. This marriage didn't last either. I think they divorced in the late 1940s.
*I have no idea where Ann BBD fit in.

Ann was a dance hostess in one of the London night clubs. She met a 'sugar daddy' called Pike. When she gave birth to her son Stephen in 1954, she took Pike's name, although Stephen doesn't think that he was his father. We'll never know!

Ann didn't spend much time with Stephen - he was sent off to boarding school when he was four-years-old - the fees paid for by Pike. Then she met James Templer and married him in 1956. (I wonder if he was Stephen dad!!) Ann died in 1958. She had a malignant brain tumour. It was left to Stephen's grandmother Kathleen to take care of Stephen when he was home from boarding school. But she died in 1962 after falling over and fracturing her skull. From then on Stephen's grandfather Delvin (by now remarried) and living in Brighton, took care of him.

Ann was the half-sister to Anthony Steel (1920-2001) the actor, (The Wooden Horse, Where No Vultures Fly, etc) who married Anita Ekberg. His parents were Edward and Kathleen Steel. From what I have gathered, Anthony adored Ann and spent a lot of time together.

That's about it! Stephen knows absolutely nothing about his mother or father and is relying on me to fill in the gaps. If I come across anything useful I will let you know. In the meantime I have attached a photo of Ann and a copy of her death certificate.
