Helen Starkey

HELEN STARKEY HAGLER-JOHNSON, born November 22, 1908, in West Green, Alabama, to Dr. and Mrs, Lake Lewis Starkey. Helen moved to Texas in 1924 and attended Rice Institute, graduating (1930) Phi Beta Kappa. She married John A. Hagler and raised 4 children. She moved to South America (1956) and later. Africa, where Mr. Hagler was a representative for an Agency for International Development. Helen returned to the United States after Mr. Hagler's death (1964). She met Reverend Lawrence Johnson (1979) in California and returned to Houston, after 50 years, and was married that same year. She was active with Reverend Johnson as a member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church and his companion during his tenure as Chaplain at the Texas Medical Center. After his death in 1994, she continued her activities alone and was diagnosed with cancer in January 2000. Helen bravely endured treatment allowing her survival to complete unfinished business and say Goodbye until September 8, 2002, when she departed and joined Lawrence and all previously departed loved ones. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 11, 2002, 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.
