Thomas Curtis

( - )

This Thomas Curtis family below is known as the Wethersfield Curtis Family. This book A Family Named Curtis: Descendants of Thomas Curtis of Wethersfield, CT 1598-1982, compiled by Rose Mary Goodwin, devoted to his entire family.

According to this book "A Family Named Curtis: Descendants of Thomas Curtis of Wethersfield, CT", Thomas CURTIS was born in about 1598, in Appledore, Kent, England, but this needs further research. He was NOT from Nazig, Essex, England. The records show both CURTIS and CURTICE for this family.

His parents are unknown at this time. They may be Thomas Curtis (1560 - 1606) and Mary Camp Curtis (1560 - 1594) but this needs further research.

Thomas Curtis arrived in New England in or before 1636. Thomas appeared in records in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT in 1636. Just when he arrived, where he arrived, or which ship he sailed on is not known.

Thomas married Elizabeth SALMON in 1639 and settled in Wethersfield.
*Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700, pg. 199 states "CURTIS, Thomas (-1681) * Elizabeth __; b 1639-40 [this means that the first child was born around that time, see pg. xiv]; Wethersfield/Wallingford".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*This THOMAS CURTIS/CURTICE was NOT the wife of "Widow Curtiss", aka as ELIZABETH CURTIS/CURTISS, d. 1658 of Stratford, CT. She was married to JOHN CURTIS/CORTEIS in England. They were in Roxbury, MA by 1638 and lived there for a short time, then moved to Wethersfield. They soon moved to Stratford by 1640. She was widowed in about 1640 or soon after, he probably died in Stratford. They had John, William, Thomas, and Mary Curtis/Curtiss.
*It is a known fact that she added an extra S to the surname CURTIS to set her family apart from other Curtis families.
*This family was from Nazig, Essex, England and they are known as the Stratford Curtis family.
*See A Genealogy of the Curtiss family being a Record of the Descendants of Widow Elizabeth Curtiss.
*The yDNA tests also showed that these two Curtis lines have different haplogroups. They are NOT genetically related.
*These two families and other Curtis families were often conflated and carelessly researched, please do not suggest any changes without doing thorough research.
