Individual Details

Ebenezer Witten Hubbard

(3 Jan 1899 - 14 May 1977)

Edward was not the name given him at birth. His legal name was Ebenezer Witten Hubbard and he was usually called “E.W.” or sometimes “Neeze” by family and friends in the Midwest where he grew up. He married his first wife, Dora Bell Stewart, in 1917, and they had three sons. By 1940 the marriage had ended in divorce, after which E.W. spent time at various jobs throughout the western US, including working on the Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) project in the Arctic area of Alaska, a Cold War early warning system. Sometime after that E.W. and his brother Stanley V., Jr. ended up in California. E.W. had no love of his first name, and when he began working at Edwards Air Force Base near Palmdale, California, he decided to adopt the first name “Edward.” He and his second wife, June (Opal June Warwick) settled in Palmdale permanently, enjoying life in the desert and road trips out of state when the mood arose.
