Individual Details

William Watts Walston

(25 Aug 1879 - 9 Sep 1942)

My father was William W. Walston. He was the son of Young Bird Walston and Julia Sophia Carroll of Anderson County, Texas. His occupation was Track Section Foreman on the old International-Great Northen Railroad. It later became the Missouri Pacific RR and now the Union Pacific RR. His career on the railroad covered 37 years, always on call and often working seven days each week. One time after I had been employed by the RR and was reluctant to go to work on the weekend, he told me get up and get to work, "you have to always protect your job". We moved about every three years to other towns between Palestine and Spring, Texas before moving back to Palestine in 1925.
Following in my father's footsteps, I began my RR career on June 05, 1929. It covered 47 years on the IGN RR and the Missouri Pacific RR. I retired in August of 1976 at Osawatomie, Kansas as Superintendent of Roadway Machines. This position covered parts of 5 states. My duties were supervising ten Work Equipment Mechanics in maintenance and repairing of equipment and machines. I traveled by company automobile and averaged about five thousand miles per month. I moved back to Palestine, Texas in 1978.
Y.B. Walston.
