Not proved - maiden name. Reportedly dau of Benjamine and Eliza A. Berry Weeden. Eliza died abt two months after Ellen's birth, Ellen was raised by father and stepmother, Catherine Adeline Fitten, who married 1837. (see note).

Possible prior marriage to a Tanner/Sanner. Children Wm. F. Tanner abt 1852 and Elias P. Tanner abt 1856 are in home of Ellen and David Gilbert and children in 1860 census. William is also in their household in 1870. If they are her children, she did not include them in her number of children in 1900 census, where she indicated she had 5 of 6 children. She and David had six known children.
