Okemah resident William Niblack Ellis Jr. died Saturday in an Okemah hospital. He was 85. Ellis was born on June 13, 1914, in San Saba, Texas, to William Niblack and Kate Houghton (Flack) Ellis.He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam, before retiring as a master sergeant.
Ellis married Melva Lee Stone on Aug. 14, 1950, in Waco, Texas at James Conaly Air Force Base.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of the American Legion, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).
He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Kate Ellis; a brother, Frank Greer Ellis; and a grandson, Justin Ellis.
Survivors include his wife, Melva Ellis, of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, William Niblack III and Donna Ellis, Fort Walton, Fla.; Rodney Tate Ellis, Lockhart, Texas; George Thomas and Kathryn Ann Ellis, Midwest City; six granddaughters, Tamara Dant, Karren Brown, Tara Wittehoeft, Kristina MacNair, Melissa Kate Barnes and Joanna Ellis; two grandsons, Brian Thomas Ellis and Aaron Ellis, three great-grandchildren, Erin Wittehoeft, Kaitlyn MacNair and Sarah Dant; and a host of relatives and friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Okemah, with the Rev. Don Lehman officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.
