Individual Details

Andrew L. Daily Sr.

(23 Sep 1806 - 27 Sep 1872)

Andrew Daily was born in New York on September 23, 1806. By 1829, at the age of 23, he was living in Lorain County, Ohio (near present day Cleveland). There he was married to Sally Mariah Carpenter and they had ten children. (She was the daughter of Levi Carpenter of the early Carpenters of New England. They came to Massachusetts from England in the 1650s.)
In 1848 Andrew and his family moved west to Boone County, Illinois, (where Rockford, Illinois now exists) where he was a farmer holding 560 acres, which he bought for $1.25/acre.
By 1854 Andrew brought his family to Bremer County, Iowa. Between 1854 and 1855, he purchased land patents from the U.S. government land office totaling 1,164 acres. In the 1860 census he is listed as a farmer with a total worth of $22,000 ($540,000 in 2009 dollars). By 1870 his wealth had grown to $33,000 ($914,000 in 2009 dollars).
Andrew was an active member of the community. He was on the original board of trustees of the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Waverly, Bremer County, Iowa. He was elected coroner twice, in 1855 and in 1857. Andrew once found a dying stranger on the road from Independence to Janesville and, upon his demise, saw to his burial, the first in the county. Andrew Daily, Thomas Sewell, and Henry P. Moore bought a small plot of land (for $6.25) and established a burying ground, now known as Sewell Cemetery. Andrew Daily died on September 27, 1871 [sic 1872] at the age of 65 years, reportedly one of the oldest residents of the county at that time. He is buried in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa.
Possibly Andrew S. DAILY's parents were Ebenezer & Dorcas DAILEY who lived in Lorain Co., OH. This Ebenezer DAILY and family probably lived in 1810 in Ontario Co. NY.
