Individual Details
Eugene Davis Erskine
(18 Jan 1894 - 28 Jun 1993)
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 1, at First United Methodist Church in Perryton, with Rev. Eddie Allsup, former pastor, assisted by Elder Vince Hardy of College Station and Rev. Todd Dyess, pastor.
Burial will follow in Ochiltree Cemetery, under the direction of Boxwell Brothers.
He was born January 18, 1894 in Angleton, and was a lifelong bachelor. He served with the U. S. Army in France in World War I, and with the U. S. Navy in the South Pacific in World War II.
As Ochiltree County's last World War I veteran, flags in Perryton will be flown at half mast in his honor.
A retired school teacher, he taught in many different Texas public schools over 32 years, many in one-room schools. He also served as principal in several schools while also in the classroom.
Because of his love of teaching small children, he then taught his own private kindergarten for eight years following his retirement.
He moved to Perryton in 1982 from Copperas Cove to live with a niece, Pat HARDY, and her family. He resided there until entering a nursing home six months ago.
A lifelong Methodist, he was a member of the local congregation, and held memberships in the American Legion Post 254, Ochiltree County Senior Citizens Association and Young At Heart.
He is survived by three nieces and several great nieces and nephews.
