Excerpt from Uncle Cliff:
“My parents were Anna Demaris Asman and Charles Russell Ivory. They were married on July 16, 1902 at the age of 29 and 28. My sister’s name was Louise and she was born on October 28, 1902. I was born on June 22, 1904 and was named Clifford Russell Ivory, after my dad in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Both of my grandparents lived in Tabor, Iowa. My dad died of a gunshot accident on April 15, 1906. He was buried in Tabor, Iowa.
My mother, sister and I lived in Tabor, Iowa until 1910. Then we moved to Soda Springs, Idaho where my mom’s older sister, Ann Jeanette or “Nettie" and Robert Newton Roberts or “Newt" lived. My mom filed for a homestead just north of Soda Springs. It was required to live on the ranch for 3 to 4 months a year for 3 years to improve the property. I don’t know who built the house but it was probably Uncle “Newt" because he did that kind of work.
Louise and I started school in Soda Springs. The kids were really cruel to strangers in town and especially to me because I was the only kid to wear glasses. So whenever we were out of the classroom on recess break or lunch, I would take my glasses off and stick them in my pocket. They were always getting broke. I don’t know how my mom ever stood all the stupid things I did growing up.
My mom always seemed to work at many different jobs in the summer as well as during the school year. One time I remember she got a job cooking for some sheep ranchers. I finally got to be heavy enough to stomp the wool down into the bags. During school I got a job helping out around the ranch delivering milk in the morning and doing chores after school till bedtime. After my sister married Dan, I stayed with them several years helping them around their ranch and goofed off every chance I could.
