Henrietta Easton Davis

(28 Sep 1853 - 18 May 1933)

There were several women named Henrietta Davis born in Alabama inthe 1850s.
One was Henrietta “Minnie” J. Davis, 17 Sep 1854 - 16 Jul 1884. Her parents are unknown. She is knownonly from the records of her marriage to John G. Gay and her burial. Itis possible that she is one of the following Henriettas.
AnotherHenrietta was the daughter of John Daniel Davis andFrances Morris Rush. John and Frances were married on 28 Nov 1852 in TallapoosaCounty, Alabama. Henrietta was the first of at least six children born inTallapoosa County, Alabama. She was living with her parents in TallapoosaCounty at the time of the census dated 10 Aug 1860 when she was 6 years old andthus born 1853-1854.
AnotherHenrietta was the daughter of James E. Davis, born1827 in North Carolina, died 7 Apr 1886 in Alabama, and Caroline Higdon, born1827-30 in Alabama, died 1906. Her parents were married on 17 May 1850 in PikeCounty, Alabama, and are buried in the Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery inBrundidge, Pike County, Alabama. Henrietta wasliving with her parents in Barbour County, Alabama, at the time of the census dated7 Aug 1860 when she was 7 years old and thus born 1852-1853. Nothing else isknown of her after 1860.
Anotherwas Henrietta Eason Davis [9D7V-G88], daughter of Zebulon Pike Davis 16 Jan1816 – 3 Jan 1882 and Williametta D. Eason 1822 – 4 Apr 1889. Zebulon was themayor of Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama. This Henrietta was born in 1850in Huntsville and died unmarried on 6 Dec 1924 in Huntsville. She is buriedthere in the Maple Hill Cemetery near her parents.
WilliamThomas Newsome, Sr. married a Henrietta E. Davis [LB94-3HD] about 1874 probablyin Tallapoosa County, Alabama. This Henrietta was born in Alabama in 1853 (Find-a-Graveclaims she was born 28 Sep 1851 despite the fact that 1853 is on the tombstone). She moved with her husband to Texas, where she died in 1933 (Find-a-Grave has18 May 1933) and is buried with him in the Willow Wild Cemetery in FanninCounty. See Find-a-Grave #46569729. Her middle initial E. appears only in the1900 census, which also states that she was born in September 1853. WilliamThomas Newsome, Sr. was born in Georgia on 14 Nov 1853. His parents were NewtonNewsom and Jane Wright, who were married on 29 Aug 1852 in Harris County,Georgia. They were both from Georgia but living in Tallapoosa County, Alabamaat the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census. In 1900 they were living in Fannin County,Texas.
JohnGilbert Gay married Henrietta “Minnie” J. Davis [L4TW-WXH] on 28 Dec. 1873 inElmore County, Alabama. She was born 17 Sep 1854, died 16 July 1884, and isburied in the Central Baptist Church Cemetery, Elmore County, Alabama, near herhusband. Her tombstone has the name Minnie J., not Henrietta, but the marriagerecords give her name as Henrietta J. Davis. John Gilbert Gay was born 20 Nov1854 in Alabama and died 25 Aug 1925 in Central, Elmore County, Alabama. Henever re-married. His parents are believed to be Henry M. Gay and ElmiraElizabeth Jane Smith, both from Georgia but living near Rockford, Coosa County,Alabama, in 1860. Henry M. Gay died during the Civil War on 18 Aug 1860 in Charlottesville,Virginia, and his widow married Leroy D. Moore on 10 Mar 1867 in Elmore County,Alabama. Elmira Jane Smith Moore is buried in the Central Baptist ChurchCemetery, Elmore County, Alabama, with Leroy D. Moore.
Thequestion is which Henrietta Davis married William Thomas Newsome, Sr., andwhich one married John Gilbert Gay? Also, who were the parents of each wife? FamilySearchFamily Tree has William Thomas Newsome, Sr. married to [LB94-3HD] with no knownparents, and John Gilbert Gay married to [L4TW-WXH], the daughter of John Daniel Davis and Frances Morris Rush. Is thiscorrect?
Theevidence is circumstantial. Henrietta Eason Davis [9D7V-G88] cannot be the Henrietta we are looking for because she wasburied with her maiden name and so was never married. The Henrietta born to James E. Davis and Caroline Higdon does not seemto have a FamilySearch ID though her parents do. She was living south ofMontgomery while the other Henriettas wereliving north of Montgomery, so she seems unlikely to be the one we are looking for.
TheHenrietta born to John Daniel Davis and FrancesMorris Rush was living in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, as was WilliamThomas Newsome, Sr., so she seems to be the likely wife for him. Mostimportantly, John Daniel Davis is known to have beenborn in South Carolina, and Frances Morris Rush was born in Georgia. In thecensus of 1900, 1920, and 1930 Henrietta E. Newsom stated that her father andmother were born in exactly those states. Therefore, I conclude that the wifeof William Thomas Newsome was the daughter of JohnDaniel Davis and Frances Morris Rush.
Henrietta“Minnie” J. Davis [L4TW-WXH] was the wife of John Gilbert Gay, and her parentsare still unknown.
