Leo Vernon McCaleb Jr.

Raised in Rocksprings, he graduated from Rocksprings High School in 1938. Following graduation Leo went to work for the Texas Highway Department. In December 1941 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp where he served his country during World War II.
After the War Leo returned to Texas where he married Ouida G. Holmes of Leakey on May 4, 1946. He returned to work in the Engineering Department at the Highway Department and lived in Rocksprings until 1950 when they moved to Uvalde. After raising a family and retiring from the State Leo and Ouida moved in 1974 and made their home in Leakey. While in Leakey they owned and operated Mac’s Washateria for 15 years. When the Frio Canyon EMS was established in the 1970’s Leo was one of the first volunteer dispatchers. He enjoyed listing to country music and traveling.
Leo is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Herbert McCaleb, sister Vivian Adams and his twin sister
Cleo Simecek.
Leo is survived by his wife of 63 years, son Larry McCaleb and wife June, daughter Joyce Weston and husband Butch all of Leakey, Grandchildren; Arnold McCaleb and wife Angela of Wahiawa, Hawaii; Michael McCaleb of Atsugi, Japan; Barbara Ivy of Austin, Texas; Quentin Weston and wife Darlene of Jacksonville Florida and Jason Weston and wife Christy of Dallas, Texas; Great-Grandchildren; Taylor McCaleb, Benjamin McCaleb, Monica Earle, Laura Weston, Garrett Weston, Davis Weston and Cooper Weston; one sister Genevieve Trees of Leakey and one brother Carroll McCaleb and wife Cindy of Uvalde; numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
Leo was a member of the “Greatest Generation”. He meant what he said, his handshake was his word, he loved his family and they loved and will miss him.
Honorary Pallbearers were Chuck McCaleb, Roger Simecek, Tom Holmes, James Trees and Leo’s Grandchildren.
Graveside services were held 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Leakey Floral Cemetery.
Brother Doyle Brooks will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

Leo V. McCaleb of Leakey, Texas passed away on January 15, 2010 at Amistad Nursing Home in Uvalde, Texas. He was born in Coughran, Texas on November 6, 1920 to Vernon and Iva McCaleb.Raised in Rocksprings, he graduated from Rocksprings High School in 1938.
