(31 Jan 1898 - 23 Mar 1969)
Residence: 941 Poplar, Abilene, TXBurial: 25 Mar 1969Willie Bernice Williams Bean was Born Jan. 31, 1898 in Cleburne,Texas in Johnson County. She was the daughter of Joel Worth & Willie Ann Holsemback Williams. Growing up during that era she was a farm girl in every sense of the word. Being raised up on the cotton farms and cotton fields around that area provided lifelong lessons on learning to be responsible, self sufficient and resourceful as an individual and as a family where every member, including the children, worked hard to scratch out a living and yearned for prosperity. In 1918, she married Robert Stephen Bean with whom she shared 51 years of marriage. Her sister-in-laws absolutely adored her and she was family from the get go. In her early years of marriage she and Robert lived around Thurber & Strawn Texas because Robert worked the coal mines. But with the oil boom of the 1920's they found themselves in Breckenridge, Texas where they lived most of their lives. Bernice & Robert raised their two girls, Billie Jo & Bobbye Jean Bean, in Breckenridge. Bernice's childhood lessons proved invaluable to the family, especially during the Great depression of the 1930's. She is remembered as a devoted wife and mother to her family. While raising their two girls, she made their clothes, worked in the garden and prepared all the meals. She took care of their home, leaving nothing undone while her husband worked in the oilfield. This was a fulltime job in and of its self to say the least. Through the years, her cooking skills were first class with all of the family members. Each and every one of them was ready to pull up a chair at the dinner table when Bernice had been in the kitchen. She quilted blankets and loved to crochet and was quite a seamstress. These things were more out of necessity than hobby, but it was a labor of love none the less. She was also a huge animal lover all of her life with cats and dogs being part of the family. One of her favorite things to do was travelling. She loved going to Colorado, taking in all the beauty of that state and visiting her big brother, Buster, who had a cabin in the mountains outside of Denver. In her later years of life, around 1968, she and Robert moved to Abilene, Texas to be near their oldest daughter, Billie Jo Berry. Bernice died of breast cancer in March of 1969.She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Bobbye Jean Kelley who also lost her life to breast cancer in July of 1964. Survivors at that time included her husband, Robert Stephen Bean, her daughter, Billie Jo Berry of Abilene,Texas and three grandsons -Joe W.Kelley of Wichita Falls,Texas Steven Berry of Abilene,Texas and Mike Kelley of Wichita Falls, Texas.
