Death
The Yuma Daily & the Arizona Sentinel, Wednesday, May 25, 1966BLAME DRIVER IN DEATH OF MRS. RENKEN, 69
A coroner's jury ruled yesterday afternoon that Mrs. Edna Earl Renken, 69, Bard and Yuma, met her death by negligence of the driver of a station wagon. The jury of six men took about seven minutes to come to their verdict after hearing four witnesses at the inquest. Coroner Ersel C. Byrd, presided. Questions were asked by County Attorney David Ellsworth. Court Reporter Joyce Urtoxuastegui took notes for an official transcript.
Witnesses were Howard Gorman, 407 19th Avenue; Sidney Maiden, 168 N. 12th Avenue; Jim Fuquay, 1130 6th Avenue and Police Officer John Bennson, 1338 15th Street.
LOOKED LIKE
Gorman testified that the driver of the station wagon looked like a drunk man in the area of 4th Avenue and 11th Street, where Gorman had told the driver to stop his vehicle after an accident on the Safeway parking lot. Gorman said the driver failed to heed anyone and drove off at an unsafe speed.
Maiden testified that he saw the station wagon moving west on 12th Street, run a stop sign at 5th Avenue, while moving about 50 miles an hour and proceed west. Since his wife was driving, Maiden looked toward 6th Avenue and saw the pickup turn over. They then turned around and went to the accident scene.
Supervisor Fuquay said he had just sat down to eat, when he heard a crash about 7:13 p.m., May 19th. He went to the scene at the corner and observed a woman lying there, who appeared to be dead, a man lying by the curb trying to get up near the station wagon and another man inside a pickup.
Officer John Benson said he observed the same three persons, had asked the man in the pickup about the woman. He said he felt a dying pulse of the woman, before the ambulance arrived. Further, he said the man nearest the station wagon gave the name of John McDonaugh and later the name of Charles Clinton Ponder, 55, Dixie Hotel.
Ponder has been charged with manslaughter with gross negligence, a felony. Although no preliminary hearing has been held, attorney Edith Nebaker has been appointed by the Superior Court to defend him. Members of the coroner's jury were Robert C. Byrd, Robert F. Coop, F. B. Allstat, Art Frazier, Robert R. Pettit and George T. Vaught.
