James Melvin Shearer

Melvin Shearer, age 26, died at his home on North Main Street, Tuesday after a weeks illness of typhoid fever and pneumonia. He was a son of the late William Shearer. He was born at Gap Creek but had been living here for many years. A few years ago he married Miss Elsie Ragan, a daughter of the late Marsh Ragan, who with two small children survive him.
For the past several years the deceased had been working in the different oil fields of Kentucky, but had been working for the Cumberland Grocery Co. for the past few weeks.
He is survived by the following brothers and sisters, Harry Shearer of Alberta, Canada, W. Logan Shearer of Lexington, Lewis Shearer of Murl and Theophilus Shearer of this city; Mrs. Brooks Davidson of Jeffersonville, Ga., and Mrs. J.W. Smith [Talitha Ethel] of this city.
Funeral services were held at the residence at 1 o'clock Wednesday by his pastor, Rev. J.E. Baird of the Baptist church after which the remains were taken to the Elk Spring cemetery for burial. /// Son of William Francis Shearer and Mary Caroline Frost
