Howard Richard Smith, 87, of Little Rock died Wednesday, December 24, 2008. He was born November 8, 1921, in Little Rock, the son of David Richard Smith and the former Edna Rowland.
A locomotive engineer for the Rock Island and Missouri Pacific Railroads, he retired after 34 years of service. He was a decorated glider pilot during World War II.
A member of Western Hills United Methodist Church, he taught the Friendship Sunday School Class. A member of the Masonic Order, Mary Williams Lodge 307 and the Scottish Rite, he was also a Hospice Volunteer and a member of the Shepherd Center. An FAA private pilot, he loved to hunt, fish, travel and was an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Juanita Bell Smith.
Survivors include two sons, David Smith and his wife, Charlotte, of North Little Rock, and Richard Smith and his wife, Karen, of Little Rock; two daughters, Kathy Lambert and her husband, Danny, of El Dorado, Arkansas, and Lisa Crossland and her husband, Ronnie, of Alexander, Arkansas; a sister, Betty Louise Domaracki of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; ten grandchildren, Donna Kennard, Rebecca Smith, Alan Smith, Sheryl Runnells, Sarah Page, Ben, Cody and Daniel Lambert, Leslie and Sam Crossland; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Pinecrest Memorial Park Saturday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Sylvia Nosic officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth, 5800 W. 12th. St., Little Rock, Ark., 72204, (501) 661-9111.
