Rev. Juan Dean Robinson

The Reverend J. Dean Robinson, 83, began his eternal life on April 24, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Dean was born on New Year's Eve 1930 to L Dean and Ruby Robinson in Madisonville, Texas and lived in Tabor, Texas as a child. In 1942 he moved to Katy, Texas where his father taught vocational Agriculture for nearly thirty years. Dean graduated from Katy High School in 1947 in a class of 17, and was named a Lone Star Farmer of the FFA that year as well. He studied Agriculture at Texas A&M and was in the Fighting Texas Aggie Band. He graduated from Sam Houston State in 1953 with a degree in Agriculture, and while at Sam was president of the Collegiate chapter of the FFA and also was a member of the Esquires Social club. He received a Master's degree in Education from Sam Houston as well. He served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army as a member of the Nike guided missile program. He taught school in the Pasadena, Spring Branch and Aldine school districts and then served the United Methodist Church for over 31 years. Dean began his church career at St Matthew's Methodist in Houston, and also served at Moody Memorial Methodist in Galveston and the Methodist Temple in Port Arthur, Texas. He also studied at the Perkins School of theology at Southern Methodist University and ultimately received his certification in Christian Education. In 1977 after hearing the late Bishop Walter Underwood preach he told Underwood that he was not afraid to get his hands dirty in serving the Lord and received a call to serve at St Luke's Methodist in Houston where he did so until his retirement in 1999 after 23 years. He was one of the original Diaconal members of the Texas Conference of the Methodist church and was consecrated in 1977. He was ordained as a Permanent Deacon of the church in 1997 by Bishop J Woodrow Hearn.
In the true Wesleyan tradition Dean served his church and community well and leaves a rich legacy. He was instrumental in the founding of the ecumenical United Board of Missions in Port Arthur in 1970 and served as its President. He also founded the Christian Community Service Center in Houston along with a small number of equally passionate volunteers and served as its original Director. His lifelong mission was ministry to the senior population and he was the founder of The Senior's Place, now the Amazing Place, also in Houston, and also served in numerous leadership roles in the church and community including the Boards of the Harris County Mental Health Association, the Interfaith Partnership for Healthy Aging, and the LD Robinson Scholarship Fund.
Dean is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beverly Moore Robinson of Houston, and sons, Phillip Robinson, of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, and Steven Robinson and his wife Jessy of Bazel, Belgium. He was known as Big Daddy to his seven grandchildren, John Miller Robinson of College Station, Texas, Laura Robinson Fulcher and her husband Jerry of San Diego, California, and Jolie, Remy, Nickolas, Willem, and Emmy Robinson of Bazel, Belgium. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Cesily and Rorin Fulcher of San Diego, and by brother, Wilton Robinson of Burleson, Texas and sister, Diana Robinson Elder of Cypress, Texas, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues. The family wishes to especially thank the staff of the Forum and special friend, Jacqueline Fontenot.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Heights Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014 in Memorial Oaks Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77027.
The family asks that those wishing to make contributions do so to the Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) of Houston, The Amazing Place of Houston, or St Luke's United Methodist Church of Houston.
