James Jackson Wood

James Jackson Wood, husband of Mary J. Cunningham, enlisted with Co. A Earle's Battery under Captain Wm. E. Earle in January 1863. He served until the day of surrender, the 5th of May,1865. He received no wounds during his duty.
Jim's death certificate, a copy of which is in possession of the compiler, states that he died from "cystitis; finally involving kidneys". Jim suffered for 28 days and had had surgery on 21 Oct 1922 by Dr. Lanford in an effort to resolve his kidney problems. The personal information for the certificate was provided by Jim's brother, Thomas Jefferson Wood. The Saturday, 20 October 29, 1927, edition of The Greenville News, states as follows: "J. J. Wood, GREER, October 28. - (Special) - J. J. Wood, 82, a life long citizen of Greer, passed away this morning at the Chick Springs hospital after an illness of nearly one year. Mr. Wood was widely known throughout the Piedmont section and has many friends who will learn with regret of his death. He was a Confederate veteran having served through the Civil war in Earle's company, White's battalion. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Greer, and was a faithful member for many years. Mr. Wood was married to Miss Mary Cunningham early in life and his wife preceded him to the grave 29 years ago. He is survived by one brother, T. J. Wood of Greer and one sister, Mrs. J. B. Burnett, also of Greer. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the First Baptist church of Greer conducted by his pastor, Dr. T. L. Justice. Interment will follow in Edgewood cemetery in Greer. The following nephews will serve as active pallbearers, Benn. Burnett, Ollie Burnett, J. E. Wood, Fred Wood, Belton Johnson and James W. Wood. All confederate veterans are asked to assemble at the First Baptist church in Greer at 4 o'clock and serve as an honorary escort. The body will be at the John D.
