Ellen McLain

Ellen McLain Elliott, 92, a longtime resident of the Sterling area, died at home in Reno, Nev., on Wednesday, May 28, 2003.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held Monday, June 30 at 3 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. She was born May 19, 1911, in Fruita to Albert P. (Mac) and Lena Julia (Smith) McLain.
She lived in Glendora, Calif., until her early teens, when the family moved to Sterling. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1929. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Chevrolet dealership.
She married James B. Betts in 1931 and they later divorced.
In 1945, she married Glenn Smith (Lou) Elliott, a realtor and rancher in the Sterling/Iliff area. They lived on a ranch on the south side of the river near Iliff until 1962, then to Sterling. She was widowed in 1987 and continued to live in Sterling until 1992, when she moved to Newark, Del., to be near family. In 1998, she moved to Reno, again to be near family.
Ellen loved God and was an active member of her church, including All Saint's Episcopal and First Presbyterian Church in Sterling, and New London Presbyterian Church in New London, Penn. She was a member of the Iliff Southsiders Club, Sterling Country Club and PEO.
She is survived by sons Robert W. Betts and wife Margie of Albuquerque, N.M.; Glenn S. Elliott and wife Viki of Reno, Nev.; and Tom M. Elliott & wife Karin, Pueblo; 6 granddaughters; and one great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Charles and Albert McLain.
Ellen was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. Her family and friends were as dear to her as she was to them, and they are her legacy.
