Constance Dalziel

Constance Dalziel Hughes, passed away on May 2nd 2013 at John Knox Manor in Montgomery, Alabama. She was 96 years old. She was born in Jackson, Michigan and grew up in Chicago, IL. She studied at Northwestern University and then moved to New York to work in the modeling and furrier business. She married A. B. Hughes Jr. in 1941 and lived in many places during his military career. They settled in Montgomery in 1958 to continue raising their family.
She was an accomplished horse-woman who trained and taught horseback riding. She loved the outdoors and loved all animals. She was also a past president of the Montgomery Humane Society.
She was predeceased by her parents, Davison and Helen Dalziel, her husband A. B. Hughes Jr. (Huey), and grandson Dave Hughes. She is survived by her four children, Sandra Hughes Marks (Stanley) Montgomery, Michael Dalziel Hughes (Carrie) Blacksburg, VA, Steven Dalziel Hughes (Mary) Montgomery, and Christian Dalziel Hughes (Clare) New Canaan, CT. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren; Stan Marks Jr., Rick Marks (Emily), Robert Hughes (Ginger Ann), Jordan Hughes Theodore (Miles), Camilla Hughes, Edmund Hughes, Emily Hughes, Julia Hughes, Jake Hughes, Alice Hughes, and Anna Hughes. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren.
Connie's passion was her family and her animals. She had many animals throughout her life and they brought her great joy.
The family wishes to thank the staff at John Knox Manor for the exceptional love and care they gave to Connie. The family also wishes to extend special gratitude to Agnes Bennett for her care and devotion for many years.
There will be a graveside service on Sunday, May 5 at 1:00 pm at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, AL.
The family will be receiving friends at Leak Memory at noon, one hour preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Montgomery Humane Society or the charity of one's choice.
