Individual Details
Shirley Ann Baird
(19 Jan 1934 - 21 Apr 2023)
Shirley Ann Baird Speer -
Father: Edward A Baird
Grandmother: Olive McNeal Baird
Ann Baird Speer, age 89, of Lancaster, Ohio passed away Friday, April 21, at 4:45 pm, in hospice at her home. She was born January 19, 1934.
Ann was ahead of her time, learning the importance of ecology in the 1960s and contributing to efforts to save local habitats and to encourage recycling programs. She participated in many bird counts and fed the birds with attention to detail—and with patience; a trio of bluebirds made their first arrival just this spring. Her home was filled with art, books, plants, music, and love. She was devoted to lifelong learning and could respond with interest to almost any topic. If you needed to talk about something, she was always there with a listening ear. She was a steady supporter of nonprofit charities, many of them conservation related, such as The Nature Conservancy, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Xerces Society, and was particularly committed to Childcare Worldwide, even meeting with children she had sponsored on a trip to Kenya.
She is survived by her children Marla Speer, of Middletown, CT; Karen Speer McNeill, of Houston, TX; John Speer, of Vilas, NC; and Polly Speer, of Brooklyn, NY; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Speer, in September 2016. A memorial gathering is being planned. Please contact Tami McAdams for info: (614) 352-7172 Ann’s family wishes to thank the doctors and nursing staff at Fairfield Medical Center and Fairhope Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. for their compassionate care during Ann’s last illness.
