William Waugh Delashmutt, son of Elias Delashmutt, Jr. and Catherine Waugh. He was born in Frederick Co. MD, not Des Moines, IA. He married Mary Ankrom abt. 1799, probably in Ohio County, Virginia. Mary was the daughter of Jacob Ankrom who had migrated to western Virginia by way of southwestern Pennsylvania, a route taken by a number of western Maryland families; Mary d. 13 Dec 1838. Her death notice was posted in the Territorial Gazette and Burlington Advertiser. William first appears on the tax rolls of Ohio Co., VA in 1799. He received a land grant at Point Pleasant Fork in 1821. He served as a delegate from Tyler County to the Virginia General Assembly from 13 Aug. 1819 through 1830. About 1834 William's entire family moved to Iowa by riverboat from Sistersville, VA down the Ohio River to Warsaw, IL, on the Mississippi River, just below the mouth of the Des Moines River, where further progress into Iowa Territory was blocked by ice. The rest of the journey was probably made overland into Des Moines County, where they settled. In the early years William served as a member of the Iowa Territorial Legislature, and when the time came for statehood, he was a member of the first constitutional convention. Elias Delashmutt, Jr. was the son of Elias Delashmutt, Sr. and Elizabeth Nelson. Elias, Sr. was a son of Pierre de la Chaumette. Elizabeth Nelson was the daughter of John Nelson of Point of Rocks, Frederick Co. MD. Her sister Sarah Nelson married John Delashmutt, brother of Elias, Sr. All of this information is from "The Delashmutt Story"
