Harry R. Ostler died Thursday, November 8, 2001.
He was born in Salt Lake City on October 3, 1913 to Harry and Minerva May Margetts Ostler. He was an outstanding athlete, a true patriot who served his country and was active in business and civic affairs during a long and distinguished life in Utah.
As a young man, Harry excelled at sports participating in both high school and college baseball, football, and track. He was a member of the University of Utah football team from 1931 to 1934. During his senior year in college he was chosen "All-Conference" and mentioned "All-American". In track, he held the Utah State record for the Hammer Throw for seven years.
Mr. Ostler continued his support of university athletics as a member of the U of U Athletic Council and the Crimson Club.
He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and served for years as their Chapter Advisor.
Upon graduation from the University of Utah in 1934, he had the opportunity to play professional football and baseball but instead joined his father in the family business, Ostler Candy Company. He married Helen Ruth Leavitt in 1937. They divorced in 1951. In 1953 he was married to Arline Daynes Thorley until her death in 1992.
In 1941, he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army where he served during World War II until 1945. Mr. Ostler was assigned to the Army's 29th Division as Captain and landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. After the war, Colonel Ostler continued his military career in the Army Reserves, retiring in 1962.
Mr. Ostler returned to the candy business after the war and operated the company until health problems forced him to sell in 1974. During this time he was very active in business and civic affairs including the Utah Manufacturer's Association where he served for many years on the organization's Board of Directors and as its' President in 1969. He served as President of the Reserve Officer's Association and was active in the Chamber of Commerce. He was President of Utah Heart Assoc. in 1984.
In 1963, he served as President of the Ambassador Athletic Club. He was a member of the Alta Club. An avid and accomplished golfer, he was an active member of the Salt Lake Country Club. Mr. Ostler was a member of the Parley's Third Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Harry Ostler leaves behind his sister Darlene Ostler Krantz; four children, Julie (Ostler) McFadden (Mike); Richard H. Ostler (Linda), Susan Thorley Schwafel, Jeffrey Thorley, and many grandchildren and great-grand-children.
Funeral Services will be held at Garner Funeral Home, 1001 11th Ave., Salt Lake City on Monday, Nov. 12th at 2 p.m. A Viewing will be at 12 noon prior to services. Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to the local Chapter of the American Heart Association or to the Ronald McDonald House. Funeral Directors Garner Funeral Home.
